For 13 years, we have worked to shift disempowering narratives and nurture a filmmaking ecosystem in Watsonville and our Monterey Bay region. 
In 2012, Watsonville-based filmmakers, educators, and activists came together to present empowering narratives about our community.

It was an honor to close the 12th Annual Watsonville Film Festival with a special screening of "Cruising J-Town" by local filmmaker Duane Kubo! Inducted into the National Film Registry at the Library of Congress in 2023, Kubo’s documentary tells the story of the jazz fusion band Hiroshima and the burgeoning pulse of the Asian American community in the early 1970s. A highlight in the film is a cross-cultural jam with Hiroshima and El Teatro Campesino! Wonderful post-screening conversation with UCSC Arts Division Dean Celine Parreñas Shimizu.
